    Online Rummy Strategy And Rules

Rummy Players Get the Royal Treatment at Rummy Royal

Rummy is not a single card game but a "family" of card games. There are a number of popular and well-known variations, each exciting in their own right and requiring a great deal of skill. The rules and aims of the game will differ based on the particular variation a person is playing. Below, we will take a look at basic rummy and then some of the more popular variations of the game. You can experience rummy by getting $5 free rummy money and playing in the rummy freerolls at Rummy Royale.

    Basic Rummy Rules

Between 2 and 6 players participate in a game of Rummy and a standard deck of cards (52) is used. A group can continue play until a player reaches the predetermined target score or they can play for one round or several.

The number of cards dealt to each person will differ based on the number of players participating. In a two-player game, each person is dealt 10 cards. In a game with 3 to 4 players, each person is dealt seven cards. In a 5 to 6 player game, each person is dealt six cards.

The dealer deals the cards to each player starting with the person to his or her left. Each person will eventually take his or her turn as the dealer. After each individual has received their cards, the dealer will take the remaining cards and place them face down in the middle of the table. This is becomes the stockpile. He or she will then take the first card and place it face up on the table next to the stockpile. This becomes the discard pile.

Each player has to draw a card each turn. They can do so by taking a card either from the stock or discard pile. Because the stockpile is face down, no other player at the table will be able to see which card is drawn from it. However, because the discard pile is face up, everyone will see the cards taken from this pile. Individuals also have the option of melding. It is possible to meld via a run or set.

A run includes 3 or more cards that are in chronological order and also of the same suit. An example of this would be 4, 5, 6 of hearts. A set is a group of cards that are from different suits but of the same rank. An example of this would be Queens of spades, Queens of diamonds and queens of hearts. The goal is to meld as many hands as possible and then discard the last card pile.

Individuals are also allowed to lay off cards in a basic Rummy game. A player lays off when they takes the cards from their hand and add them to the already established melds of the other players at the table. Not only are players required to draw each turn. They also have to discard a card. Placing it in the discard pile does this.

A hand is over when one player is able to get rid of all of their cards either by discarding them, laying them off or melding. Once a player is able to do this, the game ends. The remaining players must keep the cards they have in their hands. They are not allowed to discard, lay off or meld them. They are then required to total up their score. Face values are given a value of 10 points, an Ace 1 point and all other cards their equivalent face value. For example, a 4 of Spades is worth 4 points. The points accumulated by the losing players go to the winner.

    Basic Rummy Strategy

When you think of Rummy you might not immediately think it's a game of strategy. But in some cases, strategy plays a huge part in playing winning rummy. We will touch on a few skills you can work on to improve you rummy strategy.

    1. Discard Effectively - Discarding in rummy is a huge part of the game. After each one of your turns you have to discard a card from your hand, face up, for the other players to see. Consider trying to mislead your opponents anytime possible. For instance, assume you have the 4 of clubs and the 6 of clubs and you are looking for the 5 of clubs. If you discard the 5 of hearts, this may send a sign to your opponents that you are not looking for 5's. Doing this could increase the chances that they discard a 5 of clubs to you if they have it in their hand. Small things like this are part of rummy strategy that makes good players become great.

    2. Pay Attention to Other Discards - Just as you have to discard a card each turn, so do your opponents. Watch carefully what they discard and keep mental note of it. If they continually discard 4's, a 4 might be a better bet for you to discard on the next turn. This isn't always true but having a good idea of what the other players are discarding can help you in the long run.

    3. Concentrate on the Game - Concentration is probably the single most important skill in the game of rummy. Concentrate on what other players are melding and what they are picking up. Watch what they discard closely also. You also need to concentrate very closely on your own hand. Be sure you don't discard a card you might need to complete a meld in your own hand.

These are just three small things related to rummy strategy that you can do when playing rummy. Keeping these items in mined will surely help you improve your overall rummy game.

    Traditional Rummy Rules

Traditional rummy utilizes two standard decks of cards but no Jokers. An Ace is valued as either a 1 or 11 and can be melded one of two ways with an A23 or QKA, the former meld using low cards, and the other, high. After a person wins a hand, any remaining player at the table who has an Ace must count it as an 11. Ten penalty points assessed for face cards.

    Kalooki 40 rules

The game of Kalooki 40 utilizes two decks. Each deck is made up of 52 cards and includes 2 jokers. Players are only allowed to meld after their initial meld has a value of 40. In this game, an Ace and Joker have penalty scores of 11 and 15 respectively.

    Gin Rummy Rules

Gin is played with a standard deck of 52 cards and no jokers. The Ace has a value of 1. Individuals are only able to knock if their deadwood (unmatched cards) total has a value of 10 or less.

    Oklahoma Gin Rules

This game utilizes a deck of 52 cards but without a Joker. The ace has a value of 1 and this does not change. It can be melded in a run of A23 or with other Aces. Individuals are not eligible to knock if their deadwood count is more then the value of the opening card.

    Rummy 500 Rules

This game is played with a single deck of cards and 2 jokers. The goal is for players to accumulate the highest score. Aces have two values, 1 or 11. Jokers are wildcards and can represent any number. After a hand is over, any player who has an Ace or Joker is assessed 15 penalty points. Face cards have a penalty value of 10. An individual totals their score by adding up the melds and builders and subtracting the value of the cards in their hand.

    Kalooki 51 Rules

A game of Kalooki 51 will use two standard decks in addition to 2 jokers. Each player is dealt 13 cards. Players have to meld a hand with a value of at least 51 before they are able to lay off their cards.

    Summary of Rummy

The game of Rummy includes many variations including, Kalooki 40, Kalooki 51, Gin, 500, Traditional and Oklahoma to name of few. Each of these has unique rules and aims. Players interested in playing the different variations must be sure to familiarize themselves with the rules. Having a good grasp of Rummy basics will make it much easier to learn the various variations.
